2025 Fall Leadership Kickoff Information

Picture
Friday, November 7, 2025 in Lansing @ South Lansing Christian Church

We are excited to announce that "Michigan's Best Magician" Anthony Gruipido will be our keynote speaker at 9:30 to kick off our event.
Check out his TikTok page: https://www.tiktok.com/@anthonygrupido?lang=en
He has opened for some big names in entertainment: The Impractical Jokers, Jim Gaffigan, Bill Engval, and America's Got Talent winner Darci Lynne the Ventriloquist. His performance focuses on mental wellness, depression, and coping skills.
In addition, students will participate in team-building and leadership activities with peers from other schools. Please only bring students who can engage in this.

The event will go from 9-1:30, with a continental breakfast from 8:30-9:15. Registration forms are due Friday, October 17-- we need our numbers by then, and names of adults/students by October 27; WE WILL NOT ACCEPT LATE APPLICATIONS THIS YEAR. It is incredibly hard to plan such a large event last minute, so to respect both Deb and my time, we will be enforcing this.

The cost is $12/person for both students and adults if you register before or on Friday, October 17, or $14/person if you register between the dates of 10/18-10/24. The price includes both breakfast and lunch, as well as a raffle. YOU MUST PAY FOR THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT YOU REGISTER, although you can have substitutes (replace one student with another). Student participants must complete a photo release form for MAEO STARS (attached below).

This event's focus is teambuilding and leadership; students will be placed on teams with students from other schools. Thus, do not bring students who aren't able to do such. This is a really great way to get students involved and engaged; it's a great way for students to network with other alternative students.

We also are looking for some quotes and themes to vote on for this year's College and Career Competition in the spring. If you have any suggestions for this year's theme, complete this form.

This year we are using jotforms again for registration; there are two separate jotforms- one for those making payments through a credit card or PayPal, and a separate jotform for those paying by check. Any credit processing fees will be passed along to the consumer (you).
If you are paying by check, the check must be postmarked by Friday, October 17.
Send checks to: Michigan Alternative Education Organization
PO Box 294
Whitehall, MI 49461

Each advisor can nominate up to two student leaders for the MAEO STARS Student Advisory Board. If you would like to nominate a student, have them complete this form. This is a great resume booster for students.

2025 MAEO STARS COLLEGE & CAREER COMPETITION

Thank you for a wonderful College and Career Competition this year!!!
HUGE thank you to our MAEO STARS Co-Chairs Mallory and Deb for making all the MAEO STARS events a success!!! We appreciate all of your hard work.

2025 MAEO STARS LEGISLATIVE DAY!!!

We had an amazing time at Legislative Day this year! A huge thank you to everyone who attended and participated. Highlights included meeting legislators, taking a self-guided tour of the Capitol building, engaging in roundtable discussions, and visiting with State Representatives and Senators!

2024/2025 LEADERSHIP KICKOFF EVENT!!!
With over 100 people and 10 different alternative schools in attendance, The MAEO STARS Leadership Conference (October 25) was a success! For those of you who joined us Friday, we hope that you and your students had a wonderful time!

The results are in! Thank you to all of the students who ran for the advisory board. The MAEO STARS Student Advisory Board will consist of the following students:
Jamal (ALA Flint), Dakota (Calhoun Community), Ellie (Lincoln Street), Seth (AEA Ogemaw), Jack (Lincoln Street), El (Mosaic), and Michael (Lincoln- Owosso).

Congratulations leaders! In addition, student's at the Leadership Conference voted on the theme for this year's College & Career Competition. The winning theme is: “Work for a cause, not for applause. Live life to express, not to impress. Don't strive to make your presence noticed, just make your absence felt.” -Grace Lichtenstein

Our next MAEO STARS event is Legislative Day, and will be held in Lansing in March 2025. This event ties in wonderfully with government/civics curriculum. Registration for this event will open up at the end of December/beginning of January, so keep your eyes peeled then!

MAEO Stars Student Advisory Board Information

We had an outstanding response from students attending the MAEO STARS Leadership Kickoff interested in serving on the Student Advisory Board. Ten came forward to introduce themselves and share the qualities they would bring to leading  the MAEO STARS Board.  We do not want to eliminate anyone from a school that was not able to attend the fall event!

If you have students in your school who have leadership skills and would like to be involved in communicating with students in other alternative schools about issues of importance as well as help in coordinating MAEO STARS activities this year, please have them submit the MAEO STARS Board Candidate form including a short bio to be used on our ballots. Please make certain you also have a photo release signed. We may feature them on our website and/or social media in the future.

Limit of 2 candidates per school.
Must submit a MAEO STARS Advisory Board Google form
Must submit a MAEO photo release form even if they have a photo release from the school
